ASILAH
Asilah is a small town about 40 minutes' drive south of Tangier. It's easily accessible by train from Fez or Casablanca (both journeys around 4 1/2 hours). It has a very pretty medina on the seafront with an interesting history of Portuguese pirates. There are wonderful fish restaurants all over town and superb antique and carpet shops. South of the town are some rocky coves and Paradise Beach lies about an hour's walk; north is a wide expanse of beach. There are some big coastal developments going on here, but the medina remains a quiet enclave of interesting architecture with a Portuguese flavour. There's an art festival every July, and many of the artists are invited to paint murals.

Available to rent in Asilah is RICKY'S HOUSE, a small, intimate house for two or three. It's in the medina and has been restored with passion and verve. Colour, light and quirky arches abound in a comfortable house that has everything, despite its size. The plant-filled terrace has magic sea views.

COST: €60 per night for two. Although this house is in Asilah, a contribution is made to the restoration projects in the Fez medina.
