SEFROU

Sefrou is a small Berber town on the edge of the Middle Atlas,  about 40 minutes' drive from Fez.  It has an interesting history as a Jewish town, reflected in the architecture and interior of some of the houses.  Moulay Idriss II lived here while he was building Fez.  Sefrou is famous for its Cherry Festival, held in the middle of June, when succulent cherries cost less than Dh10 a kilo, and the Cherry Queen is crowned.  The medina is interesting for wandering, and there are good walks around the town, including a waterfall.

DAR  ATTAMANI

This guesthouse is a delightful place to stay overnight in Sefrou.  It's an old Jewish Berber house in the medina offering simple comfort on four levels.  Decorated in pretty pastels and Iraqi glass with interesting woodwork.  The adaptable accommodation and light-filled rooms make this a pleasant stay outside Fez.  Arrangements can be made for excursions into the mountains of the Middle Atlas, souks in nearby villages, troglodytes and lakes.

Although this house is in Sefrou, a contribution is made to the restoration projects in the Fez Medina.

COST:  from Dh220 for two people, up to Dh400 for four in one room;  Dh60 for a hammock or bamboo bed on the terrace.  Breakfast and hot showers included.
